The get togethers with the girls are a lot of fun. We all agree that nothing we divulge can be shared and there can be no judgment based on familial loyalty.

My favorite was one day I was bitching about Andy and a crappy gift he gave me for my birthday. You understood where I was coming from, but you didn’t let me wallow.

“Johnna, I’m going to pass on one of the best pieces of marriage advice I ever received,” you said, and I waited patiently for this life changing advice. “You didn’t marry yourself.”

I began to say, ‘No shit, Sherlock,’ but you continued before I had a chance. “You can’t get mad at him for not thinking like you do. He heard you say you wanted a new dishwasher. To my brother’s poor male brain, he thought he was giving you what you wanted for your birthday. He’s a very stupid smart man. I mean, Mom and Dad worried he wouldn’t remember to get in out of the rain.

“If you wanted gifts done the way you wanted, you should’ve married yourself. That being said, he can be trained or set up. Prime example: Meri wanted to get the Normand Reedus Experience at Comic Con, but it was expensive. We set a plan in motion.

“I sent her husband a message, asking if he had picked her Christmas gift yet. He said he had a couple of things, but wasn’t really sure what else to get her. I told him how she’d seen the Norman Reedus Experience, but she wouldn’t spend the money. I sold it, and by the time I was done, he knew he had the perfect gift that Meri would never expect.  A few days later I got a message from him telling me he’d bought the ticket. I called Meri and told her to work on her surprised face.

“Everything went off without a hitch, and he still has no idea that he got set up. Does he, Meri?”

“Not one inkling,” she affirmed.

“So while you can’t get upset with him over the dishwasher, it doesn’t mean you can’t use his maleness against him. Now, what did you really want, so we can get the dumbass out of the dog house?”

A week and a half went by, then I came home to the perfect gift: tickets to Wicked. I’ve never received another dishwasher type gift again. Everyone thinks you are so sweet and innocent. They have no idea you are an evil genius, and the best sister-in-law ever.

Author Bio

One day some words came to mind, so I wrote them down. Soon the words became sentences, which formed paragraphs, which, in turn, formed chapters. Before long, those words had become a book.

When I'm not reading or writing, I'm a wife, mother, and business owner. I've lived on the Gulf, East, and West Coasts, but as a born and raised Southern girl, my favorite will always be the Gulf Coast. There's just no place like home...
